Mauna Loa has been erupting for the past week. The first eruption since 1984, the volcano erupted on November 28, Hawaiian Independence Day when Hawaii was recognized as a sovereign kingdom in 1843. The ongoing lava flow is now about two miles from reaching the main highway. An attempt to redirect the lava flow is unlikely based on past and expensive failures. Though the lava flow has slowed, it remains active with a continuous supply from an active fissure. https://www.usgs.gov/volcanoes/mauna-loa/volcano-updates
